What really makes an athlete successful

September 24th, 2009

We are amazed at how blessed athletically our sports stars are. They really are gifted. But one thing we don’t realize is how important psychology plays into athletics. But when you come to think of it it makes sense.  Because sports isn’t about only physical ability. When we talk about a competition the mind always comes into play.  That is why you see the most successful athletes aren’t just physically gifted. But when you get to know and talk to them you will see that they are also gifted mentally.

Now what I would like to share from my experience as a San Diego sports psychologist is that you can become great in that aspect as well. You may not be in control of your physical skills. But you can control your mental toughness. Oftentimes, it would enable an inferior athlete beat a more physically superior one.  You see it all the time. And mental toughness is the factor that makes less talented ones be successful.

So what most athletes do now is they have a success coach. Most success coaches are also full time psychologists.  Just like me, I run a family therapist San Diego business and part of that includes helping athletes. That is why it makes sense that a psychologist who deals with psychological problems can deal with the problems of these athletes.

It is not uncommon for an athlete who is struggling come to me with depression issues.  A lot of the times that depression was caused by their failures.  So as a depression counselor it has allowed me to implement sports psychology to overcome their depression. Most of the time, all they need is that one. Because failures caused their depression.Make them successful and you also get rid of their depression.

Hopefully, you will realize that the secret to success is not always hinged on your physical abilities. No, most of the the times, the secret to success is all in the mind. And by improving their mental tougness athletes experience more success.

The impact of sports psychology to athletes

August 21st, 2009

In many cultures, sports stars are idolized and emulated by many.People spend a lot just to watch sporting events.  They spend a lot of time watching sports.  Entire cities live and die their pro sports teams.  But one thing people don’t realize is what it takes to suceed. Most people think that it is only about physical abilities. But the real secret would be their mental toughness.

Why should their mindset be considered the most important?  Because when it comes down to it, most athletes are equally gifted. The reason that some succeed and most do not is because of their mindset. We all have witnessed weaker athletes performing better than those more physically gifted ones by pushing themselves to the limit.  But we have also seen good athletes struggle then turn it around by hiring a sports psychologist San Diego.

Athletes are now realizing that it isn’t all about athletic ability.  They are realizing to take their game to the next level it has to come from their mind.  And that is why sports psychologists are taking a bigger role in athlete’s success.  Most sports psychologists are counselors or family therapist San Diego practicioners.

With the realization that it takes the mind to succeed even teens are employing counselors to help them.Teens realize that athletes with stronger mental toughness are the ones likely to find success and win. That would be the reason why they seek a counselor’s help also.  I have seen a spike of this request in my teen therapy San Diego practice.

So if you are an athlete and are seeking success it might be closer than you think. If you practice some of these mind strengthening habits it can aid you in reaching your objectives. Most importantly in a competitive field like sports. It might just be the thing that would let you go past your adversaries.Every advantage that you can get your hands on is needed when there are many things at stake.  This might be that advantage you have been looking for.

Improving teenagers behavior through sports psychology

August 13th, 2009

American culture has one interesting aspect in its obsession to sports. We make the sports stars very rich by idolizing them.It is important to us that our pro sports team win all the time. We even sometimes affect the sports that our children play.It sometimes gets out of hand because of our extreme obsession.

I have noticed this trend running a family therapist San Diego service. It gets out of hand a lot of times because teenagers and their parents put too much stress on these games.  Of course it doesn’t happen all the times but it does happen.Counseling will be needed at those times.

I have seen this a lot when parents stress so much in their children succeeding that they need a counselor or psychologist.  I have a lot of parents come into my sports psychologist San Diego office wanting too much out of their kids. This will lead to a lot of stress and problems. This can sometimes cause strains in their relationships. So rather than needing help succeeding in sports they need help resolving some family issues.

It is at those times that some teenagers really feel they need help.  I help a lot of teens in my teen counseling San Diego work who can’t take the pressure it puts on them.If that happens then there will already be the need to work with the family of the teens and not just the teens themselves.A lot of the problems will be solved through the help of some counselling sessions an advice.

Of course these are extreme cases but when it does happen it is best not to let it get out of hand.  It is time to put a perspective on how important we make sports.  If we are able to do that we can make strained relationships loving once again. But it is the way to resolve it.To stop problems from getting worse by preventing it in its early stages. This will lead to a happy and productive famiy.

The secret to being succesful in sports

July 23rd, 2009

One of the wonderful things in our society is sports.Beginning with the pro athletes even going all the way to the little kids.We get to benefit from it all.One very big thing about sports, it doesn’t matter how good you are, it all comes down to a mental game.

What am I referring to with that?We have heard about the special athletes who for some reason couldn’t make it.When you examine the reason why, most of the times it was a problem in their head.  I know this for a fact helping a lot of athletes as a sports psychologist in San Diego.  At each level you are going to reach a point where everyone is pretty good.  The ones that can beat the mental game are the ones that are successful.

A lot of times the thing holding an athlete back from success is their mental attitude. We see it all the time in cases of pro athletes who are gifted just can’t succeed in their game anymore.

But we are also very aware of the instances where there was an athlete who was struggling suddenly turn it around after hiring a sports psychologist.

In golf, Tiger Woods is definitely the strongest golfer out there mentally.Yes, he is probably the best at his game.  But it is amazing to watch his competitors wilt under pressure when playing him.Very good example showing just how mental the game of sports are.

So for those people that want to go to a career in professional sports, they need to begin in high school.  By starting in high school, I mean they should make sure their mental game is in tip top shape. If they need to do something, they should start by hiring a therapist.  I get hired all the time as a teen counselor in San Diego to help young athletes.

When you boil it down to who will make it big or just be a regular, it definitely is all the difference in the world. So if you are experiencing struggles in sports, examine yourself.  A lot of times the physical struggles are a result of mental struggles. Hiring someone like a family therapist in San Diego can change that.
