Protect your computer against Internet threats with SonicWall’s Unified Threat Management Firewall

October 1st, 2009

Sonic.a leader in network infrastructure security, has launched a new software that provides security against threat of these so-called SSL Certificate Null Byte Poisoning vulnerabiltiy. Users of the SonicWall Internet security’s  Unified Threat Management Firewall technology, which protects against viruses, Trojans, worms and other threats and vulnerabilities, automatically receive updated signatures designed to repel security threats.

Various browser and non-browser based SSL implementations will be vulnerable for hijacking as your computer is incapable of defending itself from attacks. It will be easier for attackers to enter your system because your computer will not be able to recognize if your Internet connection has been tapped by a third third party using null byte stuffed cerfitificate which resembles the origin content server.

Your computer is also vulnerable to attacks from other viruses, including trohans and malwares as the attacker can exploit your computer’s weakness aside from compromised SSL session.

The BlackHat security first publicized the problem during the July 29-30, 2009 security conference held in Las Vegas. On July 31, 2009, users of SonicWALL internet security’s Unified Threat Management technology received updated signatures designed to protect against this threat. SonicWALL has issued the following IPS signature

SonicWALL has developed unique technologies to deliver zero day gateway anti-virus, anti-spyware and intrusion prevention signatures to its subscribers on a continual basis, allowing them to defend against new and existing Internet attacks and exploits such as phishing, viruses, DHA or DoS attacks and more. Customers with a current subscription to SonicWALL’s gateway threat prevention services are not affected by this vulnerability.

SonicWall. the leader in network security, focuses on developing solutions that remove the cost and complexity out of managing a secure network environment. With over one million award-winning appliances shipped through its global network of ten thousand channel partners, SonicWALL Internet security provides end-to-end solutions including Firewalls, SSL VPN’s, Email Security and Continuoinous Data Protection that collectively ensure robust, secure network protection.

Technology Basics (1-5) for Home-Based Businesses

May 30th, 2009

Technology is critical for any home-based business, especially for online marketing businesses. Frequently, however, internet marketing newbies don’t understand what kind of technology is required or how it will affect their businesses.

Implementing these five technologies are critical to the success of your home business.

The Basics

  1. If you’re going to do internet marketing (IM), you’ll clearly need a computer of some sort – preferably one of your own, either a desktop model or a laptop.Your computer should have plenty of memory, speed and the capacity to connect to the internet.Don’t use dial-up if you can help it; dial-up is too slow.
  2. A domain name that you own, so that you can begin to establish your own brand. Some advertisers will not permit you to use an Affiliate website, so you’re much better off having your own domain name.Domain names make a difference – pick a good one (short, meaningful and reflective of your business or product).  The most popular names end in “.com”. This is preferred, when available, for most internet marketing businesses.
  3. You’ll need a web hosting service to provide a “home” for your website. Many web hosting companies are available to service home businesses and internet marketers.Shop around before making your decision, as vendor services and costs do vary.
  4. You’ll also need good security for your systems and data.Use a variety of security techniques including physical security as well as firewalls and security programs like McAfee or Norton.
  5. Another necessity is backup for your local programs and data.Regardless of the best laid plans, there will come a time when your system crashes, and you suffer either partial or complete loss of data and key programs.  Consequently, you will also need a rigorous backup and restore capability.

Beware Murphy’s Law: you need to prepare for the eventual breakdowns and system crashes that will occur.  Implementing all these basic technologies will help ensure the success of your online business .

Big Brother Could Be Watching You: The 5 Most Common Uses of CCTV Systems

April 21st, 2009

Did you know you “Big Brother” may be watching you! everywhere you go? CCTV camera systems are everywhere these days -we take a look at the different ways in which CCTV is used .

Close-circuit television, also known as CCTV, refers to the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place within limited set of monitors. The system works by installing video cameras, which often tilts and pans the room, in strategic places that can give a wide view of the location. A security personnel usually observes the footages recorded by the camera into a remote monitor. The most common uses for CCTVs are for surveillance and security. Nowadays, CCTV systems are available for a private individual to install for the security of their homes and properties.

Here are the five most popular uses of  CCTV camera systems.

Surveillance of public areas. CCTVs are commonly found in most public places such as banks, airports, subways, stores and malls, and even in the streets. Having a CCTV system can provide a sense of peace and safety to the everyday citizen. People are comforted by the knowledge that criminals and terrorists are less likely to commit violent acts when there are cameras around.

Surveillance against crimes. Many case studies had proven that the presence of CCTV, whether visible or hidden, reduces crimes against people, as well as incidents of violence. The fact that the suspect’s details can be recorded in the cameras and can be used to catch him later on can greatly deter someone from committing an offense. Other than monitoring criminal acts, the surveillance systems are also being used to combat anti-social behaviours which include minor offenses such as littering, urinating in public, drunkenness, traffic violations and other public order offenses.

Security for commercial premises. Many businesses today have CCTVs installed in their establishments, not only to prevent theft and vandalism and to have a 24-hour surveillance capacity, but can also provide video footage to the police in case something did occur. Some businesses have also found other uses for the CCTV besides security purposes, in which they allow their customers to view their services through the use of the internet. That way, customers can see their items, and it provides a great personal touch, as well as helps catch any errors before the customer even receives their package.

Home security. What used to be very expensive, and hard to configure systems are now very reasonable, easy to configure, and easy to maintain, and they provide much more versatility and usefulness than just a few years ago It has become increasingly affordable for private individuals, as they can now install CCTV on their homes and property to provide security to their family and homes. This especially useful if no one would be staying at the house.

Traffic maintenance. With cameras watching the roads, it has become easier for many traffic and transport groups to observe the roads. It enables them to spot accidents, obstructions and any other road problems, allowing them to identify the location and fix it right away .This would prevent any other traffic problems that could arise if such incidents are not immediately noted.

You Need Handheld Security

March 11th, 2009

The more laptops and mobile devices are used, the greater the chance that enterprise security is at risk. How many times have you heard about a government agency that has lost confidential data when one of its handhelds was lost? You’d be surprised at how many of these losses are not reported — the problem is greater than you might expect.

This is why businesses must invest in mobile device management software. The ideal product combines support for multiple device platforms, protecting not just notebook computers but also handheld devices like Palm, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, iPhone, or Symbian. The more devices supported, the better.

Look for handheld and laptop security solutions that support a wide variety of features:

  • Encryption of data to keep confidential data safe
  • Locking of the device via password
  • Centralized control and management of all devices
  • Remote wiping of a device when lost or stolen
  • Firewall and antivirus support to protect the user from malware and other problems
  • Mandatory corporate security policies

Not everyone who uses a laptop or a mobile device understands the need for security, so it’s important to educate employees about why security is important and what they can do to help the business keep its data safe. Laptop computers are stolen every day from cars, hotel rooms, coffee shops and airports. Even though most thieves have no interest in company data, it puts everything you do at risk and can cause you grief with government agencies in certain industries. Dealing with these security problems proactively is much less expensive.

You should also worry about personal mobile devices. Many workers use these handhelds throughout the work day and important and private corporate information may end up on these devices without your knowledge or permission. Being flexible on dealing with these devices and letting employees secure them with your support is better and safer in the long run, which is where the right mobile enterprise software makes it all possible.
