The Pros And Cons Of The Dell 3500 Notebook

August 14th, 2011

USB powered digital microscope.

For many years, Dell has been creating quality computers adding the Dell 3500 Notebook to their fine line of inexpensive notebooks. If you’re used to using a standard desktop computer, this high-quality notebook will definitely impress you with its many features. This product has both good and bad points which we will present in this short review.

Despite its simple appearance, the Dell 3500 Notebook has many capabilities underneath. The cover is either silver or black, and the overall effect is that of a serious and professional computer. The 3500 is the perfect notebook for anyone looking for a retro look that contrasts the vibrant smartphones that we see so much of today. This device actually compensates well for the lack of keyboard capability that is found in the iPad and the small size of most smartphones that people own. This portable device can be taken with you anywhere and used in a similar manner that you would use a PC. A couple of the features that the 3500 Notebook has are number pad on the right and a chiclet keyboard. Dell also offers a very convenient rubber cover for the keyboard in case you would like to protect the keys from excessive wear and tear. If you are worried about whether or not you will be able to type on this notebook computer, the size of the keyboard is actually large enough that you won’t really notice. Of course, it comes equipped with a very sensitive touchpad for easy maneuverability with the mouse on the screen. All laptops come with a standard touchpad which is used instead of a standard mouse. Overall, the keyboard and touchpad are comfortable and user friendly for anything you want to do on the  3500 . USB powered digital microscope.

When comparing Dell products to other brands, you can’t avoid the fact that Dell tends to price things a little higher. Actually, the only computer products that are more expensive than the ones from Dell Corporation are those produced by Apple. It’s true that Dell has priced their 3500 onomy line, the  3500 , at more competitive prices, but if you shop around you will easily find less expensive computers made by other top brands. All things considered, you still aren’t going to find another company with as good a customer service department and who stakes their reputation on providing you with high-performing, reliable products. Don’t let the lower price of some other bargain-basement notebooks seduce you into buying something you may not be happy with in the long run. Conscientiously compare the features of the other notebooks you might be considering with the Dell 3500 and then make an informed decision based on value vs. price. USB powered digital microscope.

Hp EliteBook 8440p Review Article

May 16th, 2011

HP’s EliteBook 8440p is geared towards corporate professionals and while it lacks the entertainment popular features of its rivals, its resilient construction, great usability and stunning power cause it to great for degree studies.

Design
Finished in brushed aluminium, this is certainly one of the toughest machines around, after the Apple MacBook Pro.Its 247-minute battery life is extremely good for this type of powerful laptop, although its bulky design and thick dimensions allow it to be much less expensive comfortable to cart than the slim and smooth MacBook Pro.

Keyboard and Touchpad
Hp changed the key design slightly; no more are the keys the traditional chamfered style, nor could they be chiclet-shaped. Rather, they’re a mix of the two: while abutting another at their base, the keys tier up inside of a terraced fashion. We found the layout to be comfortable and fairly quiet. The keyboard isn’t backlit, but a tiny light to the right of the webcam provides sufficient light when your darkened area, just like over a plane during an overnight flight; however, it’s better intrusive to your seatmate who’s trying to sleep. The 2.8 x 1.4-inch touchpad might be a squashed-we needed to backtrack slightly while scrolling down pages. On the plus side, it offered almost no resistance, unlike the glossy touchpads located on the Mini 5102 and the Pavilion lines.

Display and Audio
14in 1,366×768 widescreen display, which doesn’t experience glare or unwanted reflections under even the most intense sunlight or fluorescent lighting. We were generally satisfied with the quality and evenness of the display, although colours looked somewhat dull and contrast suffered at lower brightness settings.

Features
The metal lid on the 8440p isn’t just for looks; it also helps protect the notebook from the hazards of travel, having the capacity to withstand approximately 300 pounds of pressure. The optional Hp fingerprint sensor in the lower right-hand corner of the keyboard deck also lets users secure the notebook without the require for a password.

Ports and Webcam
You will discover three USB ports, a combined USB/eSATA port and also a FireWire port, which offers an abundance of scope to plug peripherals like printers, audio devices and external storage drives. An ExpressCard/54 provides further upgrade potential. You’ll find 3.5mm audio in- and outputs, while the inbuilt speakers are what you’d expect originating from a laptop: clear enough, but a tad weedy and lacking in both volume and bass. There’s a modem connection beside the Gigabit Ethernet port; furthermore there’s dual-band 802.11n WiFi.

Performance
Outfitted with a 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5-520M processor, 2GB of RAM, along with a 7,200-rpm, 250GB hard disk, the 8440p fared well. While it’s no SSD, the 7,200-rpm harddrive booted into Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) within a speedy 44 seconds. That’s about Just a few seconds substandard, and 1 second much better than the T410. Its file transfer speed of 29.6 MBps was comfortably above average (23.5 MBps). With Oxelon Media Converter, a multithreaded app that can selling point of the 8440p’s several cores, transcoding a 114MB MPEG-4 to AVI took 53 seconds, a couple of seconds faster than the thin-and-light average. the 8440p eschews discrete Nvidia graphics a great integrated Intel GMA HD GPU. As you can imagine, its 3DMark06 score of 1,766 might be a below what average (2,127), but above such systems as the ThinkPad T410 with integrated graphics (1,374).

Battery life
Hp advertises battery life up to 6 hours and 30 minutes from the EliteBook 8440p, but in our testing, we never discovered it. Besides mobile mode on, we were lucky to stretch battery life over four hours, along with high performance, you’re investigating similar to three and change. Neither really might appear to be an embarrassment for any machine this powerful, but serious road warriors may wish to consider HP’s extended batteries to wring an entire work day from the 8440p while clear of wall outlets.

How To Upgrade Your Own Laptop For Under $175

January 9th, 2010

Do you’ve got an old laptop lying around just collecting mud that for whatever reason, you not use? It just appears thus antiquated, and slow. All you wish to do is dispose of it. The exhausting drive is simply too tiny, and also the memory sucks, plus you are already designing on getting a sweet newer laptop.

I was in the identical predicament. I have a a pair of and [*fr1] year recent Compaq Presario 2500 that’s seen higher days. I used to be thinking of giving it away, or putting it to sleep in favor of a more moderen laptop. It absolutely was my workhorse for the longest time, and had seen some serious abuse and usage. I was prepared to put it to sleep and move on once I decided to refurbish, and upgrade it.

Simply like I did, you may not have to urge rid of that previous laptop just yet. I’m going to show you the way I breathed some some new life into my recent laptop, and I did it for underneath $175. Consider this a excellent time to polish off your tech skills. I can show you how I upgraded my laptop, and how you’ll be able to too.

Unlike a PC, there are solely some components that can be simply upgraded in an exceedingly laptop. The most a pair of are the arduous drive,  and also the memory. If you were skillful enough, you may replace the motherboard, and if you knew a way to solder, then you’ll possibly fiddle with the processor still, however we’ll work below the idea that this can be beyond your knowledge.

You won’t want any fancy tools to upgrade your laptop. All you will extremely would like could be a jeweler’s screwdriver set that you can get for under $ten from any hobby store.

Before you start handling any of the interior elements, create positive your laptop is turned off, and that you simply remove the battery. There is no sense in getting shocked. Additionally, make positive to get rid of any residual static electricity by touching the chassis before you dive in.

I visited my favorite online ironmongery shop, http://newegg.com, for my upgrade purchasing. I am going to that web site as a result of it’s loaded with every kind of computer hardware underneath the sun, and they need the most effective deals I’ve found. I had to really specialize in the task at hand because once there, I am sort of a kid in a very candy store.

The onerous drive is comparatively easy to induce to and replace on most laptops. However, I still had to check my laptop’s user manual for arduous drive removal instructions. Originally, my laptop had come back with a 40GB onerous drive, however I wished to double that. I found an 80GB Western Digital Scorpio hard drive  at http://newegg.com , and for only 80. ninety nine, this is the one I went with.

Next came the memory. Originally, my laptop came with a paltry 256MB of RAM. I wished at least  1GB because my laptop had been moving glacially slow. I am not positive how I dealt with it for all those years. Please note, that not all laptops can support a memory upgrade so you must build certain yours will before you purchase anything.

To see if mine may, I visited http://ramfinder.com. You can go there too and see how much RAM your laptop can support. Fortunately, the Compaq Presario 2500 can support one GB thus I went with two 512MB Corsair memory sticks, that I got from NewEgg for only $45.99 each.

Once I had the onerous drive and therefore the memory installed, I re-loaded the operating system, and all the drivers. The whole process from begin to end (after I had the parts shipped to me) took about 45 minutes, and now I’ve got a laptop that behaves like new however cost me solely $172. 97. Considering a new laptop with equal components would have price me between $700-$900, I suppose I did pretty smart, and you will too. Simply follow this straightforward guide and you can save yourself tons of dollars whereas extending the life of that old laptop of yours.

I Just Got my Brand New Notebook!

January 9th, 2010

I recently got a 17 in. notebook, and am quite impressed with its quality.

It is so much higher than the previous IBM Thinkpad that I had years ago. Long ago, laptop computers were huge and hulking, the screen resolution was poor, they were even a lot of expensive than now, and the batteries had terribly low life expectancy. But my new Dell 17 in. notebook is everything that my recent laptop was not. It’s sleek, low-profile, with hours of battery life, and a high-resolution lcd screen that’s just simply a joy to appear at.

I place off obtaining my new 17 in. notebook for quite a long time. I have invariably found the process of buying a replacement computer agonizing. Irrespective of how long you wait, the very next week once you get whatever system you have chosen to get, there is something cheaper and more powerful at a lower worth and with a higher warranty. It’s enough to drive you completely batty. Nevertheless, I knew {that the} convenience of a brand new laptop computer was price it, and eventually I broke down and purchased my new 17 in. notebook. And I’m certain glad that I did. There is nothing that beats a laptop computer.

The most effective factor regarding my 17 inch notebook is how simple it makes work on the go. With the prevalence of wifi coffee houses, I will work from my seventeen in. notebook from all concerning town. I do a considerable amount of freelancing, therefore the luxury of having the ability to try to to all my work on the go, after I need, and from where I need, makes my life nearly feel like a permanent vacation. And once I am done with my 17 in. notebook, I slip it into my laptop laptop sleeve, and will carry it around me anywhere. It’s no burden at all, as a result of of its light-weight weight, and though I occasionally worry concerning having it stolen, or accidentally damaged, thus way no harm has come to my computer. My sturdy 17 inch notebook has really revolutionized my life. In fact, for many folks, obtaining a brand new 17 inch notebook pc like I’ve got done would possibly be a bad idea. If you are not sensible at keeping track of your stuff, it’s an exact no. You may simply lose your seventeen in. notebook computer, together with all of your work and data, due to at least one careless mistake.

Understanding Laptop Batteries

January 9th, 2010

Types of Laptop Batteries:

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) Batteries: These were the first rechargeable batteries manufactured for laptops. They were relatively cheap, had high output and versatile, because they might be used in a wide selection of products. But, NiCd batteries have currently been abandoned by laptop manufacturers with the introduction of additional efficient and lighter-weight batteries.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries: NiMH was a massive improvement concerning power output, reliability, value, safety and capacity. The “memory impact” was the sole issue with NiMH batteries that need them to be absolutely discharged before recharging to realize maximum output. These batteries can still be found in older model laptops.

Lithium Ion (LiON): This sort of batteries has become the foremost widespread for laptops since the “memory result” has been eliminated, and a lot of lighter than the other two in weight. However, the market value is additionally the highest.

Battery Cycle:

One battery cycle is employed each time a battery is charged or discharged. Technically speaking, it’s outlined as the amount of cycles a battery can perform before its nominal capacity falls below 80% of its initial rated capacity. Lifetimes of 500 to 1200 cycles are typical. As an example, NiCad battery has a cycle life of 500-1000 or a lot of cycles.

Battery Run-Time:

Battery run-time depends on a variety of factors. Normally, it’s the look of, and the facility demands created by the machine that determines the actual battery run-time. As an example, use of the screen, the arduous drive and different accessories will significantly influence the period of the run-time.

What are Smart and Dumb Laptop Batteries:

Some laptop batteries are equipped with internal microprocessor circuits that help manage battery energy, set the charger to the proper charge algorithm, predict running time, or in line with Sensible Battery System (SBS) forum, offer a state-of-charge (SoC) indication. These batteries are called “Sensible” batteries. Those batteries termed as, “dumb” don’t have these options, may be just counterparts, or may operate to supply power only.

Optimizing Laptop Batteries:

1. “Condition” is a term for fully charging and discharging a replacement laptop battery to maximize performance and permit it to reach its most rated capacity. NiMH and NiCd batteries want to be conditioned at least once a month to cut back the “memory effect”.

2. Metal connecters should be cleaned sometimes to take care of sensible conductivity

3. Guarantee that device’s power management features within the BIOS and Operating System are optimized, turning off the screen, using speed step

4. Avoid leaving your laptop on overnight all the time while charging. The laptop should be turned off occasionally.

5. Store the battery in a very cool, dry, clean place if you’re not visiting use it for a month or longer.

6. Turn down the brightness of the LCD screen when watching a movie on our laptop. Decrypt DVD movies and store it on your exhausting disk drive to avoid constant use of the DVD drive which consumes a heap of power

7. Never expose your laptop battery to heat, moisture, short-circuit, drop or physically abuse it.

Buying a Computer

How To Buy A Computer

Buying a Computer

What To Do And Why

It isn’t fair, but buying a computer is just plain easier for some than it is for others. Those who’ve purchased and used a computer in the past already have an idea of what they need in a new computer. But those who are new to the computer world could get lost in the myriad of choices available.

The short answer to “What should I buy?” is “The best.” Of course that answer is extremely subjective because “the best” to one person is certainly different to another. T`he fastest and the biggest is our definition of “the best” , but even that leaves the computer newbie confused. Here’s a quick rundown of what the computer novice should do and why.

1. Buy a computer that includes basic peripherals. Every computer can be broken down into four major components: CPU unit, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. For the novice, it’s best to buy a computer that has all of these components included so that when it’s taken home, assembling the computer is a simple matter of plugging things in where they belong. Save the individual purchases of these components for those who have more experience.

2. Decide what you’ll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for cruising the web, sending email, or performing simple word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the basic components that we just described should suffice. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you’re going to need to accessorize your system with a scanner, printer, digital camera, tablet, or digicam for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you will need a quality microphone and set of speakers.

3. Create a budget and stick to it. How much can you afford to spend on a new computer? Although the prices of computers are decreasing, they can still create a hefty expense especially if you need additional peripherals described above. In addition, you’ll need to figure in costs for maintenance, servicing, and insuring.

4. Start comparison shopping and look for the “fastest and biggest. We mean the computer with the fastest processor, the fastest modem, the biggest memory and the largest hard drive capacity. It’s important to have in the event that you truly do need that much in the future even if you think that you’ll never need the amount of speed or space available on the market today. Having such a large reserve will cut down on costs when the time comes to upgrade for more than what you may settle for in a computer that offers less.

Computer & Software Technology

5. Stick with the better-known brands. Venturing off the beaten path with lessor-known brands is again, an adventure for those who have more experience with computers. Although those better-known brands may be a tad bit more expensive, the computer novice will appreciate the comfort in purchasing a computer from a business that has a long record of building quality products, and that has the funds available for fulfilling returns, trades, servicing, and warranties.

6. Select a computer store. Having an idea of what you want in a computer and what kind of computer that you want, your only task left is to select the place in which you want to buy it. There are a number of places available including computer store outlets, online stores, auction sites, used computer stores, or your friendly neighborhood yard sale. For the computer novice, we recommend buying a computer from a physical store. In  a physical store, you have the opportunity to see the computer of interest in person and ask questions. New computer buyers also have access to store warranties, returns, trades, and services.

These suggestions should give the computer newbie a great start in selecting a quality computer for the first time and they apply to either Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After making these decisions and finally selecting one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the fascinating world of software – a world that is just as grand as the world of hardware!

Notebook Accessories

July 16th, 2009

Notebook computers are becoming cheaper and more popular all the time. And likewise notebook accessories and peripheral devices are becoming more technically advanced and less expensive at a steady rate. If you compare notebook accessory prices to what they cost years ago you’d see a remarkable difference.

Ever since I bought myself an affordable and dependable laptop, I have become a gadget freak of sorts. While balancing the books this month, I realized that even without knowing it (and even less planning it!) I had spent a whole lot of money on getting myself laptop accessories. And today, while the laptop of any normal person is meant to make them more mobile, if I need to use all my laptop accessories, I need to lug around a case for them alone. So what mobility am I talking about?

What is the point in buying notebook accessories if I didn’t have a notebook to hook them up to in the first place? Since my notebook came with very small and dinky keypads, the first and foremost notebook accessories I bought sought to remedy this flaw. So in came the flexible, full size QWERTY keyboard. Then of course came the newspaper reports about how people had maimed and hurt themselves with overheated notebooks. So I bought the next set of notebook accessories – fans to keep the notebook cool with docking stations attached.

Then of course, there was no looking back. After the keyboard and the fan came little lamps that would enable me to work in the privacy of the bedroom and not disturb the missus, who was already very offended at having to share our conjugal bed with an inanimate notebook. And in order to screen or shield my confidential documents from nosey colleagues, I got another set of notebook accessories – the screen shield which ensured that unless someone was seated directly in front of the notebook, nothing would be visible.

Soon, I began accumulating all kinds of notebook accessories. Every piece od digital device I bought came with a notebook enabled accessory. And even things like blenders and ironing presses came with a notebook powered version. The last straw for my finances was when I got myself a USB powered vacuum cleaner to clean up the crumbs and dust that settled on my notebook. Name the kinds of notebook accessories, and you could be pretty sure that I had them. Whether I managed to make the most of any or all of these notebook accessories is an altogether different matter. But surely that never stopped a gadget freak from going on an acquisition spree for notebook accessories at any point in the history of man!
