Accessorizing Computers, What Comes Out of the Box is a Really Just a Starter Kit

August 19th, 2009

Yesterday, we spent about three hours trying to convince a client of ours that brand new computers just don’t come equipped with the all things that most computers need in a PC. We tried to convince him that a fully functional computer is one that is personalized with specially selected hardware and software accessories – and that the computer purchased at the store doesn’t come with these things. Unfortunately, all of our convincing was to our avail. Our client insisted that he should never need more than what came with his boxed product and that we were just trying “bilk” more money out of him.

As computer consultants, it’s our job and mission to make sure our clients are 100% satisfied when they walk out our offices. But our job is unnecessarily made harder when people don’t take the time to learn about computer accessories and familiarize themselves with the limitations of store-bought computers. Hopefully by the time you finish reading this article, you’ll understand the lesson that we were trying to teach our client: “What comes out of the box is really just a starter kit.”

The typical computer package comes with a CPU unit, keyboard, mouse, and speaker set. That may be just fine for some, but most people require more than that especially in today’s “connected” society. Today’s users require full multimedia capabilities, a wide range of graphics tools, and accommodations for the various portables we now enjoy. These extras aren’t included with “what comes out of the box,” and the only way to get them is to accessorize.

To illustrate the importance of accessorizing, we like to use the “plain dough” analogy. Let’s say that a brand new computer is a batch of plain dough – waiting to be flavored and baked into something useful. If we want to use this dough to make a delicious batch of chocolate chip cookies, we would need to “accessorize” this dough with chocolate chips and a little brown sugar. If we want to use this dough into in a warm loaf of sesame seed bread on the other hand, we’d need to “accessorize” the dough with yeast and sesame seeds.

Computer Services and You

April 26th, 2009

Keeping a computer system healthy and free of disease can be a challenge to most companies. With computer networks and other IT solutions for your company, it is imperative to keep your computers maintained so that they will continue working. So what is a good computer repair procedure for you to use? One procedure will be to make sure that your computer’s software is current and up to date. This will also include scanning for viruses and Trojans at predetermined days to keep the computer free of problems.  You will also need to do computer maintenance on your servers and mainframe at a consistent time frame.

This will also mean doing system upgrades to the computers such as hardware and other components. Computer maintenance is a necessary part of keeping the computer running and keeping the network and other components strong and healthy. This maintenance may also include system upgrades to the mainframe and to the networks that are in place. This could include replacing cables, updating software, replacing components with new components, rewriting databases and cleaning up the hard drives of the computers by using things such as a defragger and emptying the recycle bin.

This could also mean physical disassembling of physical component to clean and replace. This could also pertain to printers and scanners which means replacing cables, ink cartridges and cables for the scanner if attached to a computer. When dealing with computer cables such as a LAN, you need to check and make certain that your cables are not frayed. Replace these when needed. If a memory upgrade is needed, then the computer must be taken offline and given the upgrade. Once the upgrades are complete, the computer needs to be brought back online as soon as possible. This is another part of computer maintenance.

You will also need to check all connections to make sure that they are all seated properly and replace worn out connections with fresh ones.  This is just one sort of procedure that can be followed for computer maintenance. With IT, you need someone who is familiar with the setup in order to perform maintenance on the system.  There are many different components to an IT system, so it would be wise to get an IT professional to perform maintenance on any section of IT. Keeping computers clean and free of junk allows them to run at maximum potential without error.

How Can You Find a Qualified Network Engineer?

April 19th, 2009

When in the market for networking and networking solutions, it may occur to you that you will need a network engineer.  A network engineer is one that must be familiar with the internal plumbing of a computer and network. This includes the T-1 lines, configuring routers, and some UNIX work.An network engineer will need to know how to use basic devices in order to maintain the network. You must think on your feet as well as work long days in order to keep things up and running.

A computer network engineer can have special training in order to work on the system, but a lot of experience comes from the job itself.  These types of engineers are information technology professionals that implement and design networks for computers. Some of the tasks that he or she will perform include media and protocols , networking devices, cables and network switches just to name a few of the things that an engineer is responsible for. The duties for an engineer differ from those that follow a network administrator. While some may have responsibilities for only one part of the IT network, others may be responsible for the entire network.

A network engineer is also responsible for maintaining and supporting the communications of the computers on the network.  There are many different types of networks such as GANS (Global area networks) LANS (Local Area Network) or MANS (metropolitan area networks). This can also include duties such as monitoring network usage, providing training and support for those that have varying levels of IT knowledge. They also work closely with other departments to keep the system running.  Managing websites and keeping internal networks going is another duty of an engineer.

So you can see why a network engineer is so important to a network. Their duties are many and they work long hours. Without an engineer, the system and network would soon fail and leave a business stranded with no way to get the network back up again. The network engineer will also be charged with possibly similar tasks to that of network administrators.  So there is a lot of similarity and overlap from one to the next.  However, a network engineer is more responsible for the network than the system administrator. So it is understood how important this position is in any company that has any kind of networking facilities.

There is no substitute for an experienced computer repair technician

April 14th, 2009

It does not matter whether you own just one computer or an entire network of computers, you will need to find a very good, experienced computer services support person/technician to help you keep those computers humming along smoothly and working for you as you need them to work. There is almost nothing more frustrating than having your computer either slow down to a crawl or go down altogether. It is at times like this that you find yourself needing to call in a computer support technician that really knows what he or she is doing so that they do not end up making matters worse than they already are.

When you are looking for a good computer repair support technician there are a few things that you need to know and a couple of questions that you should be asking to be able to know whether or not the technician knows what they are doing. These questions have everything to do with the computer technician’s skill level and training and expertise when it comes to computer repair support. You need to know exactly how long the technician has been in this field, where they were trained and what their particular specialty is (if they have one) and how can you get in touch with them directly if you have a problem after “regular” business hours. If you nave any questions about the answers that you are given you might want to do one of two things: 1)look elsewhere or 2) ask some more questions for further clarification about everything.

When you are looking for those that really know what they are doing in the field of computer repair support and computer systems, you need to talk to people who really know what they are doing. If you want someone who really knows what they are doing, you need to ask the right questions and be confident that you can rely on the answers that you are getting. You might also want to ask the technician to show you how he or she would repair a problem. If you have frequent computer problems or you are working with a repair company that really is not as reliable as you need them to be, you might want to consider choosing a different computer services company that can get the job done.

How to Find Good Computer Companies

April 13th, 2009

There are many different computer services companies that are around. The question would be, are they good enough? What do I mean, you may ask? There are many different types of computer companies. Some are good, some are horrible and some are fantastic. With that being said, how do you find any good computer companies when you need them? Do you search through a phone book or internet listing or do you go by reputation alone? There are many different ways to look for good companies for computers and everything computer related in order to find the one that fits your needs.

When you are looking for good computer companies, there are some things that you need to know in order to make an intelligent choice for your company. Here are some things to look for. Has the company been in business long? Can you check reference? How much experience do the computer technicians have in things such as IT, and do they have any certifications from the major IT services program providers?  Do they update their training in IT.?  Have they been in the same location? What are their prices for services and what is provided during those services?

The answers to these questions should give you a picture of the company. Ask to speak to current or previous customers so that you have a good idea of what the picture is. Is the premises clean? That alone will tell you what you need to know. Computer companies have a reputation to uphold and by getting the information, you can decide whether or not to pass on the company itself and find another one. For example, if a computer company has a bad reputation, you certainly do not want to do business with that company.

Something else you might want to ask of the company. Are they an independent services company or are they a chain of companies. Going with an independent company can often be the best idea and will save you money and time in the long run. Independent companies can often the best value for the money. Also another matter to think is if they are local or long distance. You want someone that will be there when you need them, not several hours away from you. Computer companies can be the kiss of death or the breath of life for small businesses.

So what do you want in computer companies? Reliability and dependability are two hallmarks of a good company.  Someone local who has a high degree of training in all matters of the IT industry is another plus and should be considered seriously. We offer reliability, locality, dependability and professionally trained staff with over ten years experience. We also offer affordability and reference upon request. With training by Microsoft, Cisco and Sun systems, our staff is fully prepared to take care of your every need. Contact us for more information by either emailing us at the link below or by giving us a call to see how we can help you.

What is Remote Computer Support?

April 11th, 2009

When you are talking about computers and computer systems, you need to know about remote computer support. What is remote computer services, you may ask yourself and how does it fit into my business? Remote programs allow you to control computers from a different location. There are programs that will allow you after downloading the software to access your computers from different places other than the work location.  This allows you to monitor what is going on with the computers, hold meetings online as well as work on another computer remotely. This can be a godsend when you are not at your business and need to get files from your business computer.

There are many different programs that businesses can use to remotely use computers, whether ones in the business or others that can be accessed from a non work location. Remote support comes in when you have or need to get remote software and hardware for your company computers.  This means that someone can help you to set up remote access as well as upgrade your system to allow for remote access.  Support can also come in the form of a trained computer technician. This technician will be able to set up your access to the remote computer as well as troubleshoot any problems with same.

There are many program manufacturers of remote programs such as Symantec for business usage.  Usually remote support entails a live help desk for the product in question. This is usually a 24 hour, 7 day a week access for those who have these types of programs on their mainframes and computers. With so many programs for remote access, what happens when you can’t reach the live helpdesk?  This is where a locally trained remote support person will save the day.

This can be the difference between success or disaster. By having someone who is trained in remote support, you have a good chance of being able to completely remotely support your computer or computers from different locations. This is invaluable for business clients. Oftentimes a remote computer can give you the time to access material without being in the office. Now, how can you get this type of support? Our company offers remote access to all of our clients and our computer technicians are well versed in remote support. Remote support includes but is not limited to software and hardware, but also being able to fix any type of problem that the software or hardware will provide.
