How Much Do you Know About Wem Wenders

September 7th, 2009

Wim Wenders trivia is likely a common subject which comes up for film students who are studying important filmmakers of the last several years. There is this upper echelon of highly respected filmmakers which all students and film buffs spend a great deal of time learning about, and Wenders is certainly one of them.  You probably already knew that he was of German decent, but did you know that in addition to being one of Germany’s most well known film makers, he is also a playwright, author, photographer, and producer?

Any Wim Wenders quiz might contain questions about the various awards and honors he has received over the course of his career, which began with the first picture he was to receive a directing credit on, “Summer in the City” which came out in 1970. He has been honored at the Cannes Film Festival (multiple times) , the Venice Film Festival, won a Bavarian Film Award, and the Locarno International Film Festival.

In addition to making many feature films which have clearly earned him international recognition, any Wim Wenders trivia buff would be able to tell you that he has also been very well recognized for his work in the documentary field. He has made several recognized and well known documentary features. One of the most well known of these is “Buena Vista Social Club” a documentary made with musician Ry Cooder which focused on telling the story of a group of Cuban Musicians. Wenders clearly identifies strongly with music as a source of inspiration for his filmmaking, as he has made other documentaries about musicians, as well as directing music videos for groups with profiles as high as U2, arguably one of the most famous bands in the world.

Wenders has been quiet  over the last several years. In 2004 he released the movie Don’t come Knocking, which would then be his last film release until 2008’s Palmero Shooting. The willingness to leave this kind of space between his projects only further highlights Wender’s intense desire to only work on projects that he personally feels have value and to which he feels connected at any given time. One of the hallmarks of his career has been his ability to stay true to himself, which is why he has also allowed himself the latitude to stray from features to documentaries to writing in order to work on whatever he feels most passionate about at any given point in his career.
